Cinema & How it Influences Milkbar

If you were anything like me growing up, spare time meant ticking off the IMDB top movie charts. Doing my research at 10,11,12 years old on what I thought was meant to be common knowledge for adults.

Looking back now my style was influenced by film more then I realised. Studios opting to not style any highly branded items in movies may have just been for legal reasons or because the brand wasn't paying them for product placement but in my eyes this set what clothes should be. Through film I learnt that the man actually makes the clothes not the other way around.

Analysing it now it was never a great brand logo on these characters that made them cool. It was the fit and how the garment spoke to their values. I aim to dress in this way as well.

Early on my main inspiration for my T-Shirt fit was 1995's Kids (sleeves always below the elbow). The Beatas reference a lot of films but a big influence was Marlon Brando in a Streetcar named Desire. In the movies the shoulder straps on the singlets were always closer to the neck accentuating the traps.

This year I was able to help out styling a film, it made me realise a lot of what I've said above. Now I design with the awareness that I design for characters like a Film stylist would. In the coming weeks I'll be rolling out some of the Milkbar Characters.

Cheers, Simo
